Wild Rice Jesus, the Crop Art Christ
The work of Minnesota State Fair favorite, artist Lillian Colton is soon to line the walls of the esteemed institution that is my workplace. Portraits of the famous, infamous, worshiped and forgotten- painstakingly recreated in seeds. There’s Long Grain Jesus, his beard a tangle of wild rice. A pink-hued Barbara Streisand of ground white corn in her “Hello Dolly” garb. A smiling Craig Kilborn, a solemn Mother Teresa. 60’s country legend Marty Robins studded with seeds and rendered on a blue velour background. Some are good, some are very bad. But there’s something about the Willie Nelson, beaming up into a hot pink background that just makes me smile.
